Muirhead on cloud 9 after signing for Morton

New Morton striker Robbie Muirhead is excited to have been promised the opportunity to feature at centre forward again by manager David Hopkin.

The Scotland youth cap has turned out for Dundee United, Partick Thistle, Heart of Midlothian, MK Dons, and Dunfermline Athletic since making his breakthrough at Kilmarnock in 2013.

Muirhead has not been deployed in his preferred position as often as he would have liked over the course of those six years, however, and revealed the chance to make his mark there at Cappielow held huge appeal.

The 23-year-old told gmfc.net: “I’ve agreed a year’s deal and I’m really happy to sign here. I spoke to the manager and he said there would be a lot changes happening at the club, which I want to be part of.

“I first spoke to him at the end of May and he made his intention clear that he wanted to sign me. I had left Dunfermline and wanted to come here. It’s a club that wants to take steps in the right direction.

“I had played against Morton twice last year and one of the things you notice here is that the pitch is always in good condition, and that’s what you want to play on.

“I want to play as a number nine, which I’ve not done as much as I would have liked. I did when I was younger, but since then I’ve played on the left, played on the right, [and] centre mid for a spell as well.

“That was one of the things the manager said that was massive for me was that he wants to play me as a No.9. That was really important for me, because that’s where I always played when I was younger.

“I think there’s a misconception of me that I’m a targetman, but I like the ball into feet, getting shots away, taking chances. I can get physical when I need to, but that’s not my main priority.

“As a striker I back myself to score goals – If you don’t, you’re not going to play – and my target is to score as many goals as I can for Morton next season.”
