Breaking | Morton sign striker Robbie Muirhead

Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of striker Robbie Muirhead on a one-year contract that runs until 10 June 2020.

The talented 23-year-old former Kilmarnock, Dundee United, Partick Thistle, Hearts, and MK Dons frontman spent last season with fellow Ladbrokes Championship outfit Dunfermline Athletic.

And manager David Hopkin feels fortunate to have been able to add Muirhead, who featured in the Pars’ 3-0 win at East End Park on 1 December and a goalless draw at Cappielow on January 26, to his attacking arsenal for next term.

The Ton boss told gmfc.net: “It’s fantastic. Robbie has only turned 23 and we are getting someone I think we’re very luck to have.

“When I was in charge of the 20s here at Morton the first time, I saw him coming through at Kilmarnock. He went on to play about 50 games, and for a kid at that age to be playing is an indication of his ability.

“He made some really good moves to different clubs but has been used in different positions that are a wee bit alien to him, because he can play there.

“I spoke to his agent, Grant Smith, who I know well, and Grant was keen to get him back playing football, and back where I think he should be: as a striker, as a No.9.

“A lot of people will have seen him playing in a wide left role, centre mid, or other positions. But from when I first saw him as a kid, at 17 years old, he has been most effective up top – and that’s where he’ll be playing for us.

“We have good competition there. We’ve got Robbie, Bob McHugh signed up, young Kalvin Orsi has come in, and Cameron Salkeld can play there too.

“Robbie is a fantastic footballer. I think a lot of people forget, because he’s 6ft 3in, and think he’s just going to be this targetman. But he’s a cultured player, he’s quick, he’s skilful, and it’s my job now to get the best out of him.”
