Match Report | Queen of the South 1-2 Morton
Dobbie (65) – McHugh (41), R. Lyon (84)
Teenage midfielder Reece Lyon marked his first senior start by scoring a sensational late winner as Morton bounced back from Saturday’s 5-0 loss at Ross County with a massive 2-1 win over Queen of the South.
Ton boss Jonatan Johansson reacted to the Highland hammering by making five personnel changes and switching from a 4-3-3 system to a more conservative 5-3-2.
And the modifications paid off as the Greenock men defended doggedly, looked to hit on the counter, and make their set-plays count.
It was from a deadball situation that they opened the scoring four minutes before the break when Michael Tidser sent a free-kick deep into the opposition box and Gregor Buchanan headed across goal for Bob McHugh to nod into the net.
Lethal Queens frontman Stephen Dobbie drew the hosts level with his 25th goal of the campaign, firing past Derek Gaston from just outside the box on 65 minutes.
The game looked set to end in stalemate until Lyon met Jack Iredale’s long throw with a sensational swerving volley that ripped into the top-right corner to spark wild scenes of shared celebration between players and fans.
