Derek Gaston makes 200th Morton appearance

Goalkeeper Derek Gaston marked his landmark 200th appearance for the club with his 63rd cleansheet in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brechin City.

Shot-stopper Gaston signed for the club in the summer of 2012 and became a Morton double-centurion after starting against the Glebe Park outfit at the weekend.

The 30-year-old is the third Ton player to reach the milestone this term after Michael Tidser and Thomas O’Ware, and club historian Niall McGilp gave a further insight into his Cappielow career …

Saturday’s start and shutout meant Gaston is now sixth in both the all-time appearance and all-time cleansheet lists for a Ton goalkeeper.

Perhaps more impressive is that the cleansheet gives him the best shutout ratio of the top 10 Ton keepers in terms of appearances, ahead of the likes of mentor David Wylie, Erik Sorenson, Jimmy Cowan, and Roy Baines.

Speaking after Saturday’s match, manager Jim Duffy told media officer Jonathan Mitchell: “Derek Gaston today made his 200th appearance for the club.

“It is a terrific achievement, so we congratulate Derek – and for a goalkeeper to get a cleansheet is always a bonus as well.”
