David Hopkin: We could have had another penalty

After being awarded two penalties in Morton’s 2-2 draw with Queen of the South, David Hopkin feels that there could have been at least another one given at Cappielow.

In tricky conditions with the winds proving problematic in the game, the Ton were able to earn themselves a draw against the Doonhamers without the suspended Kyle Jacobs after his sending off last Saturday.

Speaking to gmfc.net, Morton manager David Hopkin said: “We’re all a bit disappointed not to get the win today for the fans but to get even a draw is something we can take positives from.

“We’ve showed over the last few weeks that we keep going until the end and I thought the boys did well to keep pushing even when we went behind twice.

“We knew that Queens had a good team and would make it difficult but we worked hard in training to ensure we could cope with that.”

On his 100th appearance, Bob McHugh would earn two opportunities to get goals when two penalties were awarded for the Ton with the striker scoring one and missing one in front of Sinclair Street.

“I think the decisions to give the penalties were fair but I think there could have even been one or maybe two more that Willie [Colum] didn’t give.

“Decisions like that maybe changes the game but I think it didn’t affect the boys because they just kept going and kept pushing.”

The manager also praised striker Bob McHugh after joining the 100 club in Saturday’s match as he joined an esteemed list of Morton players with over 100 appearances.

Hopkin said: “I’m delighted for Bob to get to that tally because it’s a great achievement to play that amount of times for a club.

“I don’t think he even knew he was at that mark yet because I told him today and he seemed a bit shocked so that must have been a nice surprise for him.

“He’s well-respected by fans here and I think everybody appreciates what he’s given to the club over the years he’s been here.”
