Morton Under-20s 2 – 1 Queen’s Park Under-20s

Scullion (58, 63) – Gallagher (74)

A Jon Scullion double earned Morton Under-20s their first three points of the new Development League West campaign as they ran out 2-1 winners over Queen’s Park at Cappielow tonight.

The frontman netted twice in the space of five second half minutes before Spiders sub Jamie Gallagher reduced the deficit with a header, but the quick-fire brace proved enough for Andy Millen’s side to claim the victory.

A Queen’s Park side coached by former Cappielow favourite Alan Mahood were the better side in the first half and only the crossbar and a phenomenal Jamie McGowan save to deny John Carter from point-blank range kept the Ton on level terms.

The second half belonged to the hosts, though, and diminutive frontman Scullion gave them the lead in unexpected fashion on 58 minutes, heading into the net from six yards after Scott Tiffoney picked him out with a pin-point cross from the right flank.

Tiffoney was the provider again on 63 minutes when he slipped a neat pass into Scullion‘s feet to find him in acres of space inside the box, and the forward did the rest, stroking a measured left-foot finish beyond goalkeeper Marc Waters and inside the left-hand upright.

The Ton teenagers looked to be on easy street until an unmarked Gallagher met Calvin McGrory’s drilled corner with a downwards header that nestled in the back of the net and set up a nervy final 16 minutes.

A Ewan McPherson cross cannoned back off the crossbar while goalkeeper McGowan did well to push clear a Liam Brown piledriver in the closing stages as the Cappielow club’s development squad held on for the win.
