Cameron Salkeld out to shine at Morton
Forward Cameron Salkeld is determined to make the most of the platform he has been provided by Morton manager David Hopkin after deciding his future lay north of the border.
The in-demand 20-year-old ignored advances from English League Two and Conference National clubs to put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Ton.
Salkeld says signing with the club was a no-brainer and wants to build on a strong season at Gateshead by showcasing his abilities at Cappielow next term.
He told gmfc.net: “I went pro at Carlisle when I was 18 and was at Gateshead last season. We had a really terrific season and just missed out on the play-offs with a really young side and a good manager.
“But things are up in the air there now and I’m not sure what’s going on, so I thought it was about time I moved on. I now consider myself a Morton player.
“I had a couple of clubs after me. I had offers from League Two in England and from the Conference, and Gateshead offered me a new contract.
“As soon as I spoke to the gaffer here and as soon as my agent mentioned Morton, it was a no-brainer in the end. Everything the gaffer said made sense.
“He’s giving me a platform. Signing for Morton is a big platform to go and express myself and to go and impress in Scotland and show what I’m all about.
“Everything adds up and it’s the perfect move in the end. Although I will have to get over the language barrier. It might be a struggle to understand some of the lads at first – and for them to understand me.
“I’m from Newcastle so it shouldn’t be too difficult – we use ‘aye’ all the time too – and I’m sure I’ll settle in quickly. I can’t wait to get going.”
The upcoming season in Greenock will not be Salkeld’s first experience of Scottish football, however, having spent a short loan spell at Annan Athletic in season 2017/18.
He explained: “I was at Annan for a short period a couple of years ago, when things were coming to an end at Carlisle. But I enjoyed it and made some good friends so it will be good to see them in the Betfred Cup.”
