Duffy: A draw is a decent result up in Inverness
Jim Duffy tells media and communications officer Jonathan Mitchell he was pleased to take a point away from a notoriously difficult venue following Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Cappielow gaffer Duffy felt a draw was a fair reflection based on the balance of play:
“It’s a very difficult venue. For anyone who doesn’t know Inverness, the pitch is right on the water’s edge, so when it’s blustery it’s very difficult conditions.
“That was the case today and we didn’t really adapt to that or Inverness’s shape. They controlled the game in the first half, put us under pressure and we couldn’t get up the pitch too often.
“In the second half, we changed our shape a little bit and managed get on the front foot for pretty much the full 45 minutes.
“Other than a few counter-attacks, I thought we dominated it. I suppose when you finish strong, you’re always a little bit frustrated you didn’t get three points.
“But on the balance of play over 90 minutes a draw was a fair result – and a decent result up here.
“It’s not a bad result against a side who were in the Premiership last year. I’m not absolutely thrilled by a point but I’m delighted we’re going back with something.”
The Ton were second best in the first half and Duffy admitted he was actually relieved to go in at the break just one goal behind. However, he was more than satisfied with the response shown in the second half:
“It was last-ditch defending that kept the scoreline at 1-0. I was actually relatively pleased with 1-0 at half-time .
“We could have been a couple of goals down at half-time and that would have made it very difficult to get anything from the game.
“But we managed to stay in the game and that’s always important when you’re not at your best, and we managed to be much more of a threat in the second half.
“Yep [I had a lot to say at half-time]. We weren’t happy, but they responded and that’s the most important thing. We got a determined performance in the second half.”
Robert Thomson netted the equaliser with a fantastic header and Duffy was pleased with both the goal and the forward’s performance:
“We put a bit of pressure on their box and Ricki Lamie did well retrieving it and just put it back in the mixer.
“Thommo gets in front of his marker, gets a little flick header and it goes in at the back post, so I’m delighted for Thommo; he put in a shift today.
“We started him wide, moved him through the centre because we couldn’t get a hold of the ball with the wind, and move him back out again.
“So I’m absolutely delighted for Thommo. He’s a terrific lad and you know, a goal always helps confidence.”
