Jai: I was emotional after Edinburgh City goal
Morton No.9 Jai Quitongo admitted he was left feeling emotional after scoring his first goal in nine months in Saturday’s resounding 5-0 win against Edinburgh City.
Describing the emotions that accompanied his second-half strike, Jai beamed:
“It’s been a long and hard seven months. I’ve had the right people around me and the manager has been good for me. The gaffer made sure I was right.
“I actually felt quite emotional when I scored. All the hard work I’ve been putting in over the last seven months has paid off, so I’m delighted.
“There was joy and relief, a bit of both, because I remember the days when I was injured lying in my bed thinking to myself: ‘When is this going to get better?’
“It was a hard time, but with the right people around me, I pulled through it and I’m back playing, so I couldn’t be happier.”
Finding the net for the first time since making his comeback was one of a number of targets he had set himself and he’s now looking to continue to get his name on the scoresheet:
“I’m always looking for more goals. I’d set myself targets from when I get injured through to next year, so that’s one of them ticked off.
“I’d like to continue that and score more, and we are more offensive now and I’m excited to get the season started.”
Despite the personal pleasure the 19-year-old took from scoring in a resounding 5-0 win, he also admitted it was a ‘massive diappointment’ not to make it out of Group F and progress in the Betfred Cup:
“Obviously it’s a massive disappointment because we saw last year, the whole of Greenock and everybody else got together and played in big games and did well in the Betfred Cup.
“It’s good to get those big draws – all the boys buzz off those games. So it is disappointing – but we take our good form into next Saturday.”
The 2017/18 Ladbrokes Championship campaign kicks off with an away match against Dumbarton this coming Saturday, and Jai can’t wait to get the league season underway:
“We’re looking forward to it. Today we showed what we can do and we need to build on that and hopefully take it into next Saturday, push on from there and have a good start to the season.“
