Duffy: Jamie will take confidence from play-offs

Manager Jim Duffy believes young goalkeeper Jamie McGowan can take a great deal of confidence from his performance in the Premiership promotion play-off second leg against Dundee United.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper made his first start of the season at Tannadice a week ago and gave a solid account of himself, producing a stunning one-handed save to deny Tony Andreu.

Although he conceded three goals, McGowan could not be faulted for any of them and gaffer Duffy explained that he had no qualms about starting the inexperienced keeper after Derek Gaston took ill the night before.

The Ton boss told gmfc.net: “I was in two minds whether to play Jamie against Dundee United anyway because I felt as if Derek’s form had dipped in the last few weeks, and he’s acknowledged that as well.

“He’s been outstanding for me for the vast part of the three years I’ve been here, but certainly in the last five or six weeks, his form levels had dipped.

“But he was sick on the Thursday night and sick going up to Dundee on the bus and really quite light-headed and stuff, and we just couldn’t take the chance and it made the decision for me really.

“Jamie had no chance with the goals, made an outstanding save in the first half, a magnificent save, and his kicking was great, and that will give him confidence.

“We have a talented young goalkeeper there and that experience will be vital for him coming back for next season after just signing his new contract.”
