Sam will put his body on the line for the Ton
New goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom has vowed to do whatever it takes to prevent opposition teams scoring against Morton next season – be that with his hands, feet, or face.
Englishman Ramsbottom signed a one-year deal with the club yesterday, revealing that it was his time working with keeper coach Dave Timmins at Tranmere Rovers that led to his move to Cappielow.
The 23-year-old former Galway, Macclesfield, and Alfreton Town custodian will now compete with Brendan Pearson for the No.1 jersey, and an obsession with keeping the ball out of the net should help his cause.
He told gmfc.net: “I’ve signed a year’s deal here at Greenock Morton. I’ve come from Alfreton in the Conference North and before that I played for Macclesfield Town, Galway United, and came through at Tranmere Rovers.
“The move came about because I know Dave Timmins from Tranmere. I worked with him for four years there, so he knows what I’m about and I know him. I’m looking forward to getting the band back together again.
“Timmo contacted me and told me he was taking the job here, that they were looking for a keeper, and he thought I’d be the prime candidate for it.
“I was open to the opportunity. There were a couple of irons in the fire in England, but the chance to work with Timmo came about again and I grabbed it with both hands. He’s only going to make me a better goalkeeper.
“I spoke to the manager David Hopkin and we both have the same ethos, in the way we want to go about things and being a team that’s in it together. We want to achieve things and do well and have a good season.”
When asked to describe himself as a player, the 6ft 5in man mountain added: “I just love keeping the ball out of the net. I keep it simple and it’s a simple position that you don’t need to complicate.
“You just have to keep the ball out of the net, and that’s what I enjoy doing the most whether it be with my hands or my face. The biggest thing is that anywhere I sign, I care for the club.
“There’s no point going somewhere just to pick up a pay cheque; I’ll give my all for Greenock Morton in the time I’m here and see where we can take it.”
