Robert Thomson signs pre-contract agreement

We are pleased to report that Dumbarton forward Robert Thomson has signed a pre-contract agreement with the club and will join in the summer on a two-year deal.

Former Dundee United, Dunfermline Athletic, and Brechin City striker Thomson caught manager Jim Duffy’s eye playing against his Morton side in recent years.

The 23-year-old scored against the Ton twice during season 2014/15, netting in both games at Glebe Park as the hosts won 3-1 in October 2014 and the clubs shared a 1-1 draw back there in February 2015.

He has also started for the Sons in all three Ladbrokes Championship meetings with us this term and has seven goals for the campaign in all competitions, including a late equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with St Mirren.

Ton boss Duffy told gmfc.net: “Robert is a different type of player to what we’ve had in the time we’ve been here. He can play as an out-and-out centre forward and with Dumbarton he has been used on the left.

“He’s an aerial threat, target-man type of striker but he does have a good touch for a big guy, and I think that’s important with the way we play. It’s not just about lumping the ball up the pitch.

“In the summer, it’s always very difficult to get strikers and front players – it’s always the hardest part – so it’s good to get someone on board early. That was important for us to look around.

“He’s had that development at Brechin where he did very well and then again at Dumbarton in the Championship, so he’s progressed his career and hopefully with the step up to full-time he can add another level to his game.”
