Quitongo & Nesbitt named in Scots U-21 squad

Striker Jai Quitongo was today named in his first Scotland Under-21 squad alongside loan winger Aidan Nesbitt for next month’s International Challenge Match away to Slovakia.

Scots youth coach Scot Gemmill has been in attendance at recent Ton matches against Queen of the South and Ayr United at the weekend.

And Quitongo, who has scored six goals in 15 starts and three substitute appearances since making his first-team breakthrough in the summer, has been handed his maiden call-up.

Celtic loanee Nesbitt, meanwhile, also earned a recall to the pool after collecting his first Under-21 cap away in Iceland earlier this month.

Proud Morton manager Jim Duffy told gmfc.net: “It’s great news that Jai and Aidan have been called up. It’s not a regular occurrence for players at our level, so I’m absolutely delighted.

“It’s Jai’s first call-up and hopefully if he gets an opportunity he’ll enjoy the experience, which would be another step forward for him in terms of the next level.

“I think him and his family should be really delighted and thrilled about it, and it’s good for the club’s reputation that we’re helping to develop young players.

“And if they can get to the international stage that’s not an easy thing to do, so to achieve that is a good boost for everyone at the club.

“As I’ve mentioned before I think we have two or three players who are more than capable of playing at international level.

“I thought Mark Russell was absolutely outstanding on Saturday, in my opinion the best player on the pitch by an absolute country mile.

“We have players who are at that level who are not far away from it as well, so hopefully the fact Jai has caught the attention then maybe that will cause them to look at one or two other players as well in the future.”
