Morton suffered a disappointing defeat against Alloa Athletic at Cappielow on Tuesday evening despite going ahead as Jim Goodwin’s side recorded their third win of the season against the Ton.

The first real chance for Morton fell just after 25 minutes as Gregor Buchanan headed the ball down from a long free kick into the box but Gary Oliver couldn’t turn and get a good connection before the Alloa defence swiftly cleared it away.

There were strong appeals from the Morton players as the ball seemed to hit the hand of Alloa defender Scott Taggart in the box however referee Steven Kirkland waved play on despite the home side’s frustration.

As the first half went on Morton enjoyed more freedom on the ball but were unable to find a way through the firm Alloa defence. Chris Miller thought he had found a way, doing well to drive forward from midfield to find Greg Kiltie in the box, but he was unable to turn and get a clean shot away.

The Ton couldn’t have asked for a better start to the second half as Alloa defender Liam Dick brought down Greg Kiltie in the box on 51 minutes and referee Steven Kirklabd pointed to the spot. Greg Kiltie stepped up calmly and drove the ball under the Alloa Keeper and into the net, scoring his third goal for the club.

The lead wouldn’t last for long however as Alloa got the equaliser five minutes later through Andy Graham’s low fired shot from the centre of the box.

With the score level both sides fought it out in midfield with both sides looking for ways to break through and snatch a vital winner.

The turning point would come on 80 minutes as Jack Hamilton nabbed what would turn out to be the winner for Alloa after getting on the end of a frantic ball that bounced around the box before landing at his feet from close range to tuck away into the net.

Morton pressed on for the remaining ten minutes but were unable to stop Alloa Athletic from going home with all three points.
