   MORTON versus Dundee

Saturday 1 February 2020
Cappielow Park, Greenock
Kick-off 3.00pm

Scene Setter

Cappielow welcomes back the Ton for the second of the Tayside double with Dundee travelling down to Greenock for this Saturday’s match.

The game is set to be a fascinating watch for both sets of supporters as the league begins to take shape for this season.

Only 3 points behind Dundee who are in the playoff positions, it will be an important game in the battle of the league as both teams will be hoping to aim for the playoffs.

With their unbeaten league run in 2020 still underway, the Ton continue to build on their good form and Saturday’s result at Dundee United showed a clear improvement in the lads since particularly the turn of the new year.

Morton’s result on Saturday proved that the Ton are definitely capable of competing with the best in the league and their draw at Tannadice is the best example of this being the case.

Current Connections

Dunoon native Declan McDaid came through the youth ranks at Cappielow and made one first-team appearance before electing to move to Partick Thistle in the summer of 2013.

Paul McGowan came to the Ton on loan from Celtic in the 2006/07 season when Morton were victorious and became Second Division winners. McGowan was named player of the month for January in this season and was also chosen for the team of the year for the league.

Gaffer’s Thoughts

“I think it’s going to be a very difficult game on Saturday. We know we’ve got to work hard in the match but the boys have trained well and are ready for the match.

“We’re all really looking forward to the game and we hope the boys can kick on from Saturday’s result.

“Sean McGinty has always been a player I’ve admired; he’s got height and strength and should hopefully be a great addition to our squad.

“Craig McGuffie is a very direct player with great ability and we now increase our ammunition on wide areas ahead of the game on Saturday.”

Last Time Round

A valiant effort against Dundee was not enough for Morton to secure a point away from home as Dundee ran out 2-1 winners against the Ton side with Jamie Ness’s goal in the last 10 minutes proving the difference.

The deadlock was broken on 62 minutes as a great cross from Graham Dorrans was met by the head of Kane Hemmings who knocked the ball into the net and sent the home side ahead.

It was a rapid response from the Ton as under two minutes later, Morton got the equaliser on 64 minutes when a sensational ball from Robbie Muirhead was able to fly to the back post where Cameron Salkeld cheekily flicked the ball in from a tight angle.

The home side would be the ones to get the winner on 80 minutes when a great pass through from Graham Dorrans set up Jamie Ness who curled the ball into the net from close range to give Dundee the lead.
