For the second time in over three days, Morton return in the league to Cappielow Park where they face Ayr United in this midweek round of fixtures.

The game comes following Morton’s important 2-1 win over Inverness at home which sent the Ton up to 7th place in the league and further away from the threat of bottom place.

Mark Kerr’s men are fresh from their 2-1 defeat at home to Dundee and will be hoping to ensure that their new manager gets a win to kickstart his managerial career.

The Ton will be hoping to continue their unbeaten home run as they have gained 13 points from 15 points available so far this season.

Current Connections

Former Morton midfield maestro Andy Murdoch has been at Ayr since 2018 however an injury rules him out for the duration of the season. The 24-year-old played around 75 times and scored 4 goals for the Ton as he was part of the team who made the Betfred Cup semi-final at Hampden Park against Aberdeen which ended in a 2-0 defeat.

Ex-Morton loan player Frank Ross was signed on a loan deal by the Honest Men at the beginning of this season.

At the same time as former Greenock gaffer McCall brought Murdoch on board, he also secured the loan signing of goalkeeper Ross Doohan. Doohan was brought in as cover two seasons ago for the Ton.

Last Time Round

It was a tough opening match for Morton as they suffered a 4-2 defeat against Ayr United after the Ton’s comeback attempt in the second half was denied by a late Ayr goal.

The game at Somerset Park saw a crowd of 1,935 fans watch the opening game of the Ladbrokes Championship campaign for both teams.

Ayr led the game by three goals to nil at one stages with two goals from Michael Moffat and one goal from Alan Forrest looking to have sealed the win.

What seemed a consolation goal for Morton came on 73 minutes as Reghan Tumilty capitalised on a mistake from Ross Doohan and sent it home from close range.

A shock was almost on the cards for Morton on 79 minutes as Bob McHugh done extremely well to play a pass through to Nicky Cadden who sent the ball under Ross Doohan’s legs for Morton’s second with the Ton now needing one goal to perform a sensational comeback.

But the comeback was not to be for Morton as Sam Ramsbottom came well off his line to block a Kris Doolan effort but the ball fell to Craig McGuffie who lobbed the Morton goalkeeper from 25 yards on 90 minutes.
