Manager’s Delight At Betfred Renfrewshire Derby

David Hopkin today announced that he was ‘excited’ about the resumption of the Renfrewshire Derby as Morton were placed in the same Betfred Cup group as local rivals, St. Mirren.

The ‘Ton find themselves locking horns with the Buddies along with Queen of the South, Partick Thistle and Queen’s Park in what the Manager described as being a “tough group.”

However, it was the pairing of his side with St Mirren that excited his imagination.

Speaking exclusively to the Club’s website he said; “It’s fantastic for the fans, the club and myself and it should also provide a financial opportunity.”

The ‘Ton Gaffer is under no illusions though as to how difficult the task will be to progress from the group.

“All-round, it’s the toughest group I’ve seen in the competition and it will be a battle but it’s exciting. St Mirren will be about nine games into their season by the time we meet whereas we will just be kicking off so it’s a real test.”

When asked about the absence of supporters at the matches, he said; “Well, it’s October so we’ll need to see about that. The situation might have changed but if not, I’m sure that fans from both clubs will be taking up the live-streaming option.”

The Manager himself, of course, is no stranger to the fixture as he played for the ‘Ton in a number of local derbies.

“That was a few years ago but they’re always great games. Obviously, there’s the passion involved in it and they are Premiership opposition but the local aspect of the game is a real factor.”

Each team will play four matches, starting in early October, with the eight group winners and four best runners-up reaching the last 16 on 28/29 November.

The Greenock Morton website will provide fixture information when the dates have been confirmed.
