Jai’s Scotland Under-21 joy
Striker Jai Quitongo has told of his pride at receiving a Scotland Under-21 call-up ahead of this afternoon’s friendly fixture in Slovakia.
The 19-year-old, who is also eligible to represent Portugal and Angola, was named in Scot Gemmill’s squad alongside loan winger Aidan Nesbitt.
Both Quitongo and Nesbitt jetted out to the central European nation on Monday with the group ahead of today’s match, which kicks off in around an hour, and the Ton development squad product was thrilled at what he says was a surprise inclusion.
The frontman told gmfc.net: “I’m delighted to have been called up to the 21s and to be away with them in Slovakia – buzzing, actually over the moon and my family are as well.
“I wasn’t aware that Scot Gemmill had been at our games, but the SFA asked for my passport through the manager and I brought it in.
“I still wasn’t sure if they were going to call me up or not at that stage, so I am obviously delighted to have been named in the squad. It’s a good opportunity to go away and meet the boys and hopefully look to impress.
“The thing is, I couldn’t have done it without the gaffer giving me my chances and my team-mates and it just shows that we have been doing well. It’s a good milestone for everybody.”
Quitongo was joined in the squad by fellow Ton team-mate Aidan Nesbitt, with the Celtic loan star earning his second successive call up while at Cappielow, and the teenager is pleased to have a familiar face along with him.
He added: “I’m obviously delighted for Nizzy to be called up as well. It doesn’t come along often that Morton get players called up, so it’s a good thing for the club to have two called up at the same time.”
