Gary targets successful season with the Ton
Gary Harkins might have signed on for a season here at Cappielow – but he says he is hoping to enjoy a number of successful years with his hometown team.
The 32-year-old local lad was presented with the opportunity to join Morton for the first time in his career this summer and seized the opportunity.
Although ambitious forward Harkins has penned a one-year deal, he feels he has plenty to offer and hopes to enjoy a successful and prolonged stint on Sinclair Street.
Speaking exclusively to gmfc.net, he said: “I’ve signed for a year but I’ll hopefully do well and stay as long as I can. The manager spoke my agent and spoke to me and I was just delighted to come here.
“Being local I obviously know a lot of people and have a lot of friends who are Morton fans, so I’m looking forward to it. But hopefully they give me a better reception this time around!
“This is the first time I’ve had the actual chance to sign for the club. I was involved with Morton youths around about at the age of 12 and in with Celtic at the same time and then I went to England. Ever since then it didn’t really come around.
“I always thought I could maybe, if I was lucky enough, get to come here. So it was dead simple, I spoke to the manager and wanted to come here. I still think I have a good few years yet, so if I do that here it would be great.
“The team did very well last year. What a season they had, getting to the play-offs. There are some really good players, so to be able to come here and play with them and enjoy it is a big thing for me.
“I’m not here to fill out time. I’m still ambitious, I’m hungry to play and I want to win, and hopefully I can do that here with Morton.”
Harkins has been a thorn in our side at Cappielow over the years and he hopes to continue to thrive at the Greenock ground in Ton colours.
He added: “I’ve done alright here in the past. I think I scored one of my favourite goals here. I chipped the goalie with my left foot when I was at Dundee [in a 3-1 win for the Dens Park outfit on 16 April 2011]. So I’ve always enjoyed playing here and hopefully I can play well next season.”
