Duffy hails stylish manner of stunning Queens win

Thrilled Jim Duffy hailed the style in which his magnificent Morton side overwhelmed league leaders Queen of the South at Palmerston yesterday.

The Ton were in phenomenal form as they dismantled the Doonhamers, dominating in every department as they romped to a stunning 5-0 victory against a team unbeaten in the first quarter of the league campaign.

Manager Duffy was obviously delighted with what he felt was a polished performance and said his side showed real quality against Queens.

He told gmfc.net: “I’m thrilled with the performance and the result. You don’t get too many days like there when everything goes really well.

“To score five and win comprehensively … but more so in the style we did. Generally speaking we are a hard-working side, we are organised and have a lot of commitment.

“But today was about the ability. They were showing real quality: everybody showed their quality today in abundance and when everyone shows that and believes in themselves and has that confidence we are not a bad side.

“And everything today, from the preparation to the commitment and effort and the ability and the quality and the calmness was there. I thought we were really calm on the ball and passed it well.

“Obviously one or two goals came from set-pieces, which we worked on, so if you do all those things and they call click then it’s a good day.

“You don’t often get it as clinical as we were today in terms of goals and we’re not a team blessed with natural goalscorers. So to come down and score five is brilliant for everybody.

“It took us by surprise today; there’s no denying that. We’ve had so many injuries and we had to patch up the defence today.

“We put Jamie [McDonagh] to right-back, Michael [Doyle] to centre-back, we put Ross [Forbes] out a little bit to the right because I thought if Stephen Dobbie drifts off, Ross’s experience would give us strength in that area.

“Andy [Murdoch] and Jamie [Lindsay] were outstanding in the middle of the pitch, but I thought Ross was so influential in the game.

“So all those things we had to think about and thankfully it worked out today and I’m just delighted for the players for putting so much in.

“We’re not going to get carried away because we happened to win so well, but for the fans who travelled down and the players it’s a good day and a good weekend, so let’s enjoy it.”
