Peter Houston appointed assistant manager
Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Houston as assistant manager on a two-year contract.
A former Albion Rovers, Falkirk, and Dumbarton forward, the 60-year-old enjoyed spells as first-team manager at both Dundee United, with whom he won the 2010 Scottish Cup, and Falkirk.
New Ton boss Jonatan Johansson was keen to add experience to his backroom staff and identified Scotland Under-21 coach Houston as the ideal fit after meeting with prospective candidates.
Speaking to media officer Jonathan Mitchell, a delighted Johansson said: “Peter is a fantastic signing for the club. I think every recruitment should enhance and improve the organisation, and Peter certainly does that.
“It is very, very important to get this appointment right, and I said from the start that I would take my time and conduct a thorough interview process and get references.
“The main thing for me in terms of the profile was that I was looking for someone who had been a manager, someone with experience in this league, and other leagues in the Scottish game.
“I also wanted someone who had been an assistant manager and who could guide and mentor me and who is a very good coach.
“With Peter we have a very good friend who put us in touch. Obviously I was very impressed with what he had done before in football, but after meeting we also got on very well from the beginning.
“So those were the main criteria and Peter was the perfect fit for me starting my career as a manager. I’m delighted to have been able to bring him to the club.”
Houston will combine the post with his Scottish FA role, and Johansson added: “With players, coaches, assistant managers, there are sometimes prior commitments. That’s a fact of life and something you have to accept.
“Peter’s role with the Under-21s is something very positive for the club, and something very positive for me. He has a great insight into the best youth players in Scotland and that’s of great value to us as a club.”
