Breaking | Goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom signs

Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom on a one-year contract that runs until 10 June 2020.

The 23-year-old Englishman began his career as a youth player with Tranmere Rovers and enjoyed stints with Galway United in the Republic of Ireland, Barrow, Macclesfield Town, and Alfreton Town.

And manager David Hopkin has now moved to bring the imposing 6ft 5in shot-stopper north after he was recommended by new goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins.

He told gmfc.net: “Through Dave’s contacts Sam was recommended to me. We discussed his attributes and watched his clips, and I liked what I saw. We then had him up for a chat and managed to get him signed.

“I’m delighted. Sam has played non-league, which is not easy for a young goalkeeper of 23. He’s 6ft 5in, has a great presence about him, speaks well, and wants to do well.

“He’s a student of football. Everything you ask him, he already knows. He knew this club, the players … everything, so he’s gone and done his homework, too.

“He also played with Jordan White at Barrow who I had at Livingston and spoke to him. Jordan told him to go and work with me if he got the chance, and I take that as a real compliment.”

Ramsbottom will now compete with Brendan Pearson for the gloves in Hopkin’s new-look Morton side next term, and the Greenock gaffer added: “I have young, talented goalkeepers at 23 and 22 with physical presence.

“It’s about building something. We have to be patient, but if in the long-term we get it right – Dave with his expertise will then they will compete with each other and fight it out for No.1 and No.2 and that will be great for the club.”
