Given the amount of discussion around the club this week, and the importance of the member meeting of Morton Club Together on Monday evening, we feel it is important to give supporters an update.
Firstly, to be absolutely clear, Greenock Morton has no intention of forfeiting any scheduled fixture. The club’s priority is to ensure that all of our commitments to the SPFL, our opponents, our players and, most importantly, our supporters are met.
The current situation is challenging, and the board is acutely aware of the situation. The board and football department are working together to explore all appropriate options available to us within the resources currently at the club while we manage a very testing injury situation.
Ian Murray’s comments reflect the very real pressures currently being experienced within the football department.
We appreciate that the recent reporting is frustrating and concerning for everyone connected with Greenock Morton. The club does not underestimate the strength of feeling among supporters, nor the importance of the decisions which lie ahead.
With MCT sharing the details of the Estrella deal, we also want to provide clarity on Dalrada.
In June 2025, Dalrada entered into a sponsorship agreement worth £540,000 as voted on by members, which has been paid in full. In September 2025, a further £240,000 was committed, with no additional strings attached. Of this additional amount, £109,000 has been received to date. In January 2026, Dalrada formally advised both boards that its partnership would be coming to an end, but confirmed it would honour second-year options for players recruited through the additional funding, representing a potential commitment of £288,600.
Up until May 2026, Dalrada had been making the minimum monthly payments of £45,000. However, payments then reduced to £22,000 in June, £7,000 in July, while no payment has been received so far in August due to business pressures on their end. The commitment for the forthcoming season amounts to £195,000. Brian Bonar has stated to us this week that it remains his intention to fulfil the commitment in full, but has cited significant timing and financial challenges.
As supporters can imagine, this places significant stress on the football club.
Everyone behind the scenes wants success for the club and is committed to doing all we can to achieve it.
Success in the coming months may look different than previous seasons. On the park we of course want to keep competing and the players and management will give everything to do so. However, off the park is where it will matter most.
It is clear the club as a community owned institution requires external support. Whether that be from Dalrada coming through with their payments, other sources of investment, or a combination of both.
We do have several concerns with the Estrella deal which has been circulated. That is not to say these concerns can’t be worked out, but the level of veto power in particular has the potential to cause challenges with board decision making.
We also feel it crucial to share with members what is being asked of the club. On the investment being successful, we have been requested to commit six figures on new players as well as an additional wage in the form of a Technical Director. While Estrella have sourced an extra £40k investment from a third party to help fund the Technical Director post, albeit not in full as has been reported, we simply cannot agree to this level of spending in current circumstances. Our concern is that if it does go through, the vetos then put the club in a very difficult situation. We would love to provide more funds to the management team, but survival of the club matters more than survival in the division. We cannot jeopardise that with irresponsible spending.
We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Morton moves forward on a sustainable footing, both on and off the pitch. The full Board will be in attendance on Monday evening, with David and Graham in person, and Paul and Kenneth online.
