Ross puts award down to enjoying his football
Ross Forbes yesterday told of his pride to be named the Ladbrokes Championship Player of the Month for January and put his performances on the park down to enjoying his football at Morton.
Over the course of the four-week period, he helped the team to a win against Dumbarton, opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Raith, and provided an assist and got on the scoresheet in a Scottish Cup success versus Falkirk.
However, his crowning moment came on the final weekend of the month when he netted a double, including a goal of the month contender, in an emphatic 4-1 triumph away at Ayr United in a fixture screened live by BBC Alba.
And after receiving his award at Parklea and taking time to speak to the assembled press and media and pose for promotional photographs, Forbes spoke exclusively to gmfc.net to discuss a pleasing month for himself and the team.
Ton’s top scorer beamed: “It’s obviously pleasing to be recognised for awards. I’ve only had one of these awards before when I got young player for August in my first month at Motherwell.
“It was a pleasing month. In terms of goals, it was four in four matches, so personally it was maybe my best month if you look at it that way.
“It [scoring more goals] was something I looked to add to my game at the start of the season. I think I’ve done that and long may it continue.
“Is this one of the best seasons of my career? Definitely. I’ve got a lot of confidence now playing in this team, I enjoy coming to training every day.
“It’s not always been like that for me in my career, but when you’re playing somewhere you’re enjoying being it makes a massive difference, and I think that’s showing on the park on a Saturday.
“It’s always nice to pick up individual awards, but the most important thing was the four victories for the team during the month, which is not easy in this league. It’s about the team.”
The midfielder suffered a dead leg during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Queen of the South and sat out part of yesterday’s training session, but he hopes to be fit to face Raith Rovers tonight.
He explained: “I’ve got a dead leg, so I did the first part of training today. Hopefully it will be fine and clear up for tomorrow night at Stark’s Park.
“The reality is that we can’t win every game and there’s going to be games like that [Queen of the South], but it’s about how we react to it and how we pick ourselves up. That’s the most important thing.
“Obviously it’s good that there’s a game so quick to rectify what happened on Saturday and hopefully get back to winning ways. But Raith are a good team and they’ll be looking for the victory so it will be tough.”
