Ian Murray arrives as new First Team Manager
Greenock Morton are delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Murray as the club’s new First Team Manager.
Ian has today signed a contract with the club through to June 2027. He will take in tomorrow’s game from the stands, before formally starting in the role on Monday morning, with his first game being at Cappielow against Dunfermline.
Following a playing career which included spells at Hibs, Rangers and Norwich City, and being capped on six occasions for Scotland, Ian moved into management with Dumbarton, helping them spend four seasons in the second tier as a part-time club and picking up divisional manager of the year.
He then went on to have spells as Manager at St Mirren, and Assistant Manager of Norwegian side Asker, before a move back to Scotland with Airdrieonians, where he reached successive play-off finals in League 1, narrowly missing out on promotion.
Most recently, Ian led fellow Championship side Raith Rovers during a spell which included a runner-up finish in the 2023/24 season.
Ian’s full first interview as First Team Manager will be available to view on Monday, but wanted to share a quick message to supporters on being appointed:
“I’m absolutely delighted to be appointed manager of Greenock Morton. It’s a real honour to be given this opportunity at such a proud club, and I can’t wait to get started. I’m really looking forward to meeting the players, the staff, and of course the supporters, and getting to work as quickly as possible. There’s a lot to be excited about, and I’m eager to give everything I have to move the club forward together.
See you soon,
Ian”
Alongside Ian, we can confirm that Gary Miller, who has been leading the team in recent weeks, will continue to work with the first team alongside Ian as his assistant. Gary will combine this role with the Head of Youth and Emerging Talent position he has occupied since the summer of 2025.
Speaking on the appointment, Club Director Graham Barr said, “We are all delighted to be welcoming Ian to Greenock Morton as our new First Team Manager.
“After interviewing Ian, it was clear to see his passion, hunger and determination to succeed. This, alongside his track record in management, made him the outstanding candidate for the job and we are thrilled to have him at the club.
“In Gary Miller, we believe we have an extremely skilled young coach who has a promising future in the game, and we see it as a real positive that he will be stepping into the role as Ian’s assistant. A thank you must also go to Gary and Billy for their efforts and professionalism over recent weeks during the recruitment process.
“Everyone at the club is excited for this new chapter under Ian’s leadership. We would like to thank supporters for their patience over recent weeks as we went through the recruitment process. This was a critical appointment and one we wanted to take the time to get right, and we firmly believe we have the best candidate in Ian to take the club forward.”
