John Clark (1941-2025)

All at Greenock Morton FC were saddened to learn of the passing of former player, John Clark.

John made over 50 appearances for the Ton between 1971-1973 before calling time on his playing career.

Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this sad time.

A Celtic player from the late 1950s, manager Jock Stein converted John Clark from an orthodox left half to the sweeper role upon his arrival in 1965. He was outstanding for Celtic in that role and enjoyed a trophy laden career there, including the famous 1967 European Cup victory v Inter Milan. He earned 4 Scotland caps as well.

Lisbon Lion Clark moved to Morton from Celtic as player coach in 1971,  staying until 1973 when he retired from playing altogether. He appeared in  54 top flight games for Morton during that time. He returned to Parkhead after that, coaching the Celtic reserve team for 4 years. He subsequently joined former Parkhead skipper Billy McNeill as Aberdeen assistant manager, and returned with McNeil to Celtic Park in 1978. He was later to manage Cowdenbeath, Clyde and Stranraer.

Although in the twilight of his playing career Clark was a well respected player and coach during his two seasons at Cappielow, a model professional who was very popular with his Morton teammates.
