Bright future for Cappielow pitch

Delighted Morton groundsman Mark Farrell has taken delivery of a new state of the art lighting rig that he believes will further improve his award-winning Cappielow playing surface.

It was yesterday afternoon that the SGL MU36 mobile unit, which covers 36 square metres and boasts 600 wattage sodium bulbs that recreate sunlight and give out radiant heat, arrived here at the ground.

They were purchased by the club in order to aid Mark’s efforts to maintain his pitch with the Ton first-team, Under-20s, Celtic Under-20s and community projects all enjoying use of the hallowed turf.

The grow lights were shipped from the Netherlands having last been used by Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA and will be put to good use over the coming winter months.

Speaking to gmfc.net, a beaming Mark explained: “This is a very positive step for a club our size, a real commitment from the board, and a massive leap forward for our pitch.

“The rig supplements light when we don’t have it in winter, between October and March, and is an important tool in maintaining grass coverage in problem areas such as the standside and goalmouths.

“We have just had four games in the space of a week and I put forward the case that the SGL unit would be invaluable in helping maintain the best quality grass pitch, which is the surface I believe professional football should be played on.

“The board granted my request and I would like to thank them for making this possible and their continued support in my role as groundsman.”
