John Sutton: We should have seen the game out

Morton’s frontman John Sutton felt disappointed following Morton’s collapse of the two-goal lead in the final group stage game of the Betfred Cup but admits how delighted he is that the team have qualified for the next round.

The striker scored a header on Saturday against Queen of the South which gave Morton a crucial equaliser before Nicky Cadden scored a penalty just before half-time to give them the lead.

Speaking exclusively to gmfc.net, Sutton said: “We should have seen the game out. It was disappointing for us to seem so comfortable but then watch us lose them two goals.

“The good thing to see was we didn’t give up. We kept pushing for a winner even in the last few minutes of the game and that’s what I love to see.”

The Ton will now face Hibernian FC at Easter Road in the last 16 and John Sutton is relieved to even be considered in the next round.

“We know everybody in the club and the fans wants through to the next round. The boys showed desire to get over the last hurdle and send us through.

“Obviously I missed the penalty in the shootout but I’d much rather the team win and I miss. It’s what is best for the club if we are in the last 16.”

Ton fans were also able to have a first glimpse of new singings Cameron Blues and Henk Van Schaik and Sutton was impressed when the two came on.

He told us: “Henk has looked solid in training and seemed to be very calm and in control when he came on. Cameron was very comfortable in the midfield as well so there’s certainly potential with them both.

“All the signings we’ve brought in have been brilliant and they all fit in to all our plans. Everybody’s hit the ground running since coming in so it’s certainly encouraging for us before the start of the new season.”
