Kyle Jacobs signs pre-contract agreement

We are pleased to report that midfielder Kyle Jacobs has today signed a pre-contract agreement with the club and will join on a one-year deal when his current contract with Queen of the South expires at the end of May.

Former Livingston and Kilmarnock ace Jacobs worked with current Ton boss David Hopkin during his time as assistant manager at Almondvale in season 2014/15.

The 27-year-old started for the Doonhamers in all four Ladbrokes Championship meetings against ourselves last term, scoring his side’s goal in the 1-1 draw at Palmerston last month.

And Hopkin was delighted to make Johannesburg-born Jacobs his first signing as Greenock gaffer. He told gmfc.net: “I had Kyle at Livingston and he’s a fantastic pro, a fantastic player, and a fantastic person.

“The most important thing is signing players who want to come here, and the speed at which we were able to agree a deal showed me his desire to join us.

“He’s proven at this level. I think he’s played over 300 senior games, most of them in the Championship, and he’s an individual who can play in numerous positions and that’s important with the budget and the smaller squad.

“When we were at Livingston, he played in the centre of midfield – he likes to get about the pitch; he’s a fit lad and an aggressive player – but also at centre-half, left-back, and right-back.

“We’re trying to get a squad together that’s going to be competitive and he adds competition in the middle of the park and covers a lot of bases.

“Kyle is my first signing and when you build a team, you have to start by bringing in players who are probably going to be part of the backbone of your side.”

Meanwhile, Robert Thomson has advised the club that he is currently unable to take up the offer to continue in full-time football as he considers his career options outwith the game before making his final decision.

We would like to thank Robert for his efforts in his time with us at Cappielow and wish him the very best in his future career.
