Breaking | Charlie Telfer signs for Morton
by Jonathan Mitchell

Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Charlie Telfer on a one-year contract that runs until 10 June 2019.

The 22-year-old former Rangers, Dundee United, and Livingston ace has recently returned to Scotland following a spell playing in the Netherlands with Eerste Divisie outfit Almere City.

Telfer is very familiar to new Ton boss Ray McKinnon having worked together at Tannadice in season 2016/17 – a year in which he cemented himself as a regular first-team fixture making 38 starts in all competitons.

And McKinnon was thrilled to be able to entice the Scotland Under-21 cap to return to the country and join him at Cappielow as he continues to build his playing squad for the new Ladbrokes Championship campaign.

The beaming Greenock gaffer told media and communications officer Jonathan Mitchell: “We’ve signed Charlie Telfer on a year’s contract and we’re absolutely delighted to have him on board.

“He’s a top-class football player, a fantastic professional, who I know very well from my time at Dundee United. He played almost every game as we went to the play-offs.

“I recognised what type of player Charlie was – a ball player who likes to keep possession and pass. That fit the criteria of what we wanted to do perfectly and so he played a lot of games for me and had a successful season.

“He then went to Holland for a new experience – he’s that type of person; he likes to experience life – and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We knew his contract was coming up and we’d been in contact over the last three or four weeks and I’m thrilled to have been able to entice him to Morton.

“There were two or three other clubs interested but we’d been at him constantly and the way we’d worked together previously probably swung it our favour. He’ll be a great addition to the Morton squad.”

Telfer is McKinnon’s third new recruit following the recent additions of Chris Millar and Gregor Buchanan, and the 47-year-old says it is important to remain patient as he works to further bolster his playing roster.

He added: “At the moment, we just have to be patient. We’re targeting good players who are also in demand with other teams.

“So we’re working through our targets, speaking to people, and the team will take shape over the next four weeks. We’re looking forward to putting the best players we can in a Morton shirt.

“I’ve never been one to rush into decisions on signing people. Sometimes you make some of your best signings later in the window.

“We brought Tony Andreu up from Norwich on loan and he scored 20-odd goals, for example. So sometimes you need to be patient as you look to build a team that will be really competitive in the upcoming season.”
